A Plan Z Diet Trip Around the Bottom of the Lake

A Plan Z Diet Trip Around the Bottom of the Lake

I have never been to Michigan’s Shoreline Dunes area.

I was born in Wisconsin. There’s almost some sort of unwritten “law” that says if you were born in Wisconsin you do not go to Michigan on vacation. I don’t know what it is. There’s some kind of rivalry that no one talks about.

We did talk about a few other rivalries. The first one was regarding Door County. When I was little people used to say that if you were from Chicago you went to Door County but if you were born in Appleton, Wisconsin , like I was, you didn’t go there. It was too crowded with Illinoisans. Same thing with Lake Geneva. Lake Geneva is only about an hour north of Chicago so Lake Geneva is full of folks from Chicago. Too crowded. Don’t go there.

Well I was 25 years old before I ventured up to Door County. I have been vacationing there for almost 30 years now in early summer. I was 25 before I went to Lake Geneva too. An off-season conference took me there. Both places are lovely. I seem to visit both of them when they are not crowded with people from Illinois.

This year I have been very busy building The Zola Diet so I have not taken off much time at all. As Labor Day weekend approached I thought… hmm…maybe I can at least get away for a long weekend. No time to fly anywhere. That eats up too much time. I can really only take 5 days off. So where can I get on one tank of gas? And where can I go that I can get there in my little city car without my back starting to hurt?

Didn’t take me long to decide. I see commercials all summer long touting the beauty of the dunes country in Michigan. Some call it Harbor Country.

I got out a more detailed map. I heard South Haven is nice. Some prefer New Buffalo. I didn’t really care. I haven’t seen any of them, so what I concentrated on was finding an Inn I would like. I settled on Saugatuck, Michigan and a beautiful inn there that was set up by a couple of people who left Chicago for the country. As I did my research I found out Saugatuck is a real artists’ community. Nice restaurants. Peaceful.

I am going to have enough time that I can see all of the cities along the shore. I do like to drive around and explore. I plan to read a couple of novels too.

The weather is going to be perfect. I love 75 degrees. I can wear clothing and not be hot. I can roam around and feel a breeze in my hair. The 10 day outlook is my kind of weather.

So if you are reading this on Monday when it arrives, you can picture me sitting in a lounge chair in a beautiful garden reading something spicy. I plan to give this thing they call “relaxing” a good go.

And I’ll give you my report when I get back.

Cheers,
